في خطوة وُصفت بأنها من أبرز التحولات الاستراتيجية في تاريخ قطاع الطاقة الليبيري، أعلن رئيس Joseph Nyuma Boakai، جوزيف نيوما بواكاي، استعادة التوربين المتضرر في محطة ماونت كوفي الكهرومائية إلى الخدمة الكاملة، بعد سنوات من خروجه عن العمل نتيجة الأضرار التي لحقت به عام 2021، ما تسبب حينها بخسارة نحو 22 ميغاواط من القدرة الإنتاجية للكهرباء.
ويُعدّ هذا الإنجاز محطة مفصلية في مسيرة النهوض بالبنية التحتية الوطنية، إذ استعادت محطة Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant كامل قدرتها الإنتاجية البالغة 88 ميغاواط، لتعود إلى العمل بكامل طاقتها للمرة الأولى منذ سنوات.
وجاء إعلان الرئيس بواكاي خلال مراسم تدشين محطة الطاقة الشمسية الكهروضوئية الجديدة بقدرة 20 ميغاواط ضمن مجمع ماونت كوفي للطاقة، في حدث جمع بين استعادة ما فُقد وإطلاق ما هو جديد، ليؤكد دخول ليبيريا مرحلة أكثر قوة واستدامة في إنتاج الطاقة.
وأكد الرئيس الليبيري أن إعادة تأهيل التوربين تمثل إنجازاً وطنياً يعزز قدرة البلاد على توفير كهرباء أكثر استقراراً وموثوقية للمنازل والمؤسسات والقطاعات الاقتصادية، مشيراً إلى أن هذا التطور يعكس التزام الحكومة بتطوير البنى التحتية الحيوية وصون الأصول الاستراتيجية للدولة لخدمة المواطنين.
وكان التوربين قد تعرض لأضرار جسيمة عام 2021 أدت إلى تراجع إنتاج المحطة بنحو 22 ميغاواط، قبل أن تنجح فرق الهندسة والفنيون، بعد أعمال تأهيل واسعة ومعقدة، في إعادته إلى الخدمة الكاملة.
ومع عودة محطة ماونت كوفي إلى قدرتها القصوى البالغة 88 ميغاواط، وإضافة محطة الطاقة الشمسية الجديدة بقدرة 20 ميغاواط، تكون ليبيريا قد حققت قفزة نوعية نحو تعزيز أمن الطاقة، وتوسيع نطاق الوصول إلى الكهرباء، وتنويع مصادر الطاقة المتجددة، بما يرسخ أسس التنمية الاقتصادية المستدامة في البلاد.
كما أشاد الرئيس بواكاي بجهود العاملين في Liberia Electricity Corporation والشركاء الدوليين والمهندسين والفنيين الذين أسهموا في إنجاز عملية التأهيل، مؤكداً أن ما تحقق اليوم ليس مجرد إصلاح تقني، بل خطوة وطنية كبرى نحو مستقبل أكثر إشراقاً واستقراراً لليبيريا.

In a development being hailed as one of the most significant milestones in Liberia’s modern energy history, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has announced the successful restoration of the damaged turbine at the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, returning the facility to full operational strength after years of reduced output following the 2021 incident that removed approximately 22 megawatts from the national grid.
The achievement marks a turning point for Liberia’s power sector, with the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant now operating at its full installed capacity of 88 megawatts for the first time in years.
President Boakai made the announcement during the commissioning ceremony of the new 20-megawatt Solar Photovoltaic Plant at the Mount Coffee Energy Complex, an event symbolizing both the restoration of lost capacity and the launch of a new chapter in Liberia’s renewable energy future.
Describing the rehabilitation as a major national accomplishment, the President emphasized that the restored turbine will strengthen electricity generation, improve reliability, and support the government’s commitment to delivering affordable and dependable power to Liberian households, businesses, and public institutions.
He noted that the successful restoration reflects the administration’s determination to modernize critical infrastructure and safeguard strategic national assets for the benefit of current and future generations.
The turbine sustained severe damage in 2021, reducing the plant’s output by approximately 22 megawatts and impacting overall electricity production. Following extensive rehabilitation efforts, engineers and technical teams successfully returned the unit to service, allowing the facility to resume full operations.
With the hydropower station restored to its full 88-megawatt capacity and the addition of the newly commissioned 20-megawatt solar facility, Liberia has taken a decisive step toward expanding electricity access, strengthening energy security, and accelerating the diversification of its renewable energy portfolio.
President Boakai also praised the contributions of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, development partners, engineers, and technicians whose dedication made the restoration possible, describing the achievement as more than a technical success—it is a national victory that powers Liberia’s path toward sustainable growth and prosperity.
